The large folding tables bound at end of vol. 4 This edition of a famous.18th century chemical work is the most complete, containing the ‘‘ Philosophy of Chemistry,’’ not contained in the English edition of 1785. Foureroy was one of the main supporters of the antiphlogiston theory beside Lavoisier and others. ‘“‘ His experimental investigations served as preparatory work in many branches, i.e. in those of physiological and pathological chemistry ” (E. v. Half calf. 412 pp. With engraved title and engraved plate showing the ‘‘ Economical Laboratory of Guyton.” The author was surgeon at Hoxton -and is best remembered as the author of ‘* Organic Remains of a Former World.”’ 595 Priestley (Joseph) Experiments and Ob- servations'on Different Kinds of Air. Vol. I and II second edition, vol. ITI first edition. London, 1775-1776-1777 £5 10s 8vo. 3 vols. Old calf, rebacked. With 6 folding plates. Priestley’s most important scientific book, containing accouats of his discoveries of oxygen, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide, sulphurous acid, carbon dioxide, hydrochloric acid, and ammonia gases. This edition of volume 2 contains the important statement (on p. 320) that while staying in Paris. in October, 1774, he mentioned to Lavoisier his experiments on oxygen, adding, ‘‘he began his experiments on the same substance and presently found what I have called dephlogisticated air, but without investigating the nature of it.” This settles Lavoisier’s claim to be an independent discoverer of oxygen. 596 Ramsay (Sir William) The Gases of the Atmosphere, the History of their Discovery.
