![Births The births showed a considerable increase during the year from 241 in i960, to 269 in 1961. The rate being 9.17 per 1,000 estimated resident population. Adjusted for age and sex distribution of the population, the rate was 11.3 (i960, 11.3). Population The Registrar General’s hgures showed that the estimated mid- year resident population was 29,330. Census figures for the same period being 28,926, giving an increase of approximately 400. Full details of the 1961 Census are not yet available for the Borough of Bexhill. Deaths There were 585 deaths during the year, an increase of 46. Adjusted death rate being 11.97 (England and Wales, 12.0). The average age of death was:— Males . . 70.95 years (expectation of life, England and Wales, 68.1). Females .. 76.1 years (expectation of life, England and Wales, 73-9)- Causes of Death The major causes were (i) heart and circulatory disease, 338, as against 311 in i960, an increase of 27; deaths from coronary thrombosis and angina being in, as against 107 in i960 (49 males and 62 females), (ii) Cancer deaths again showed a decrease from the figure in the previous year, i.e. 100, as against 109 in i960. It is particularly gratifying to note that deaths from cancer of the lung again showed a decrease from 19 in i960, to 12 in 1961 (10 males and 2 females). 'J'here were two deaths from motor accidents during the year and tliree from other accident causes, viz.:—■ Accidental fall .. .. i Carbon monoxide poisoning.. 2 Poliomyelitis \o cases of poliomyelitis were notihed during the year. Again this satisfactory .state of affairs can almost be certainly attributable to the high ])ercentage of children and adults under 40 years of age being vaccinated against the disease. During 1962 ix)liomyelitis vaccine will be, almost comj)letely oral in administration, and it is hoped that this will imj)rove the hgures still further. Diphtheria t)nce again one is ha})])y to re])ort that no cases of diphtheria have been notih(;d during tin; year. 'I'his being the nth consecutive year in which there; have; bee;n ne) cases. Sufficient tribute to the value of fli|)hthe*ria imrnnnisatiem, anel it is again strongly emphasised that](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b28921793_0008.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
