Label on verso describes sitter as "William Heberden F.R.S. B. 1710. D. 1801. Author of Medical commentaries on the history and cure of diseases". It does not resemble him (as shown in his portrait by W. Beechey). Nor does it resemble his son William Heberden the younger F.R.S. (1767-1845), the translator of his father's 'Commentarii de morborum historia et curatione' into English as 'Commentaries on the history and cure of diseases'. The portrait of the latter by J. S. Templeton after R. Rothwell is reproduced by Sir Humphry Rolleston, 'The two Heberdens : William Heberden the Elder (1710-1801), William Heberden the Younger (1767-1801)', Annals of medical history, new ser., v. 5, 1933: 409-427, 566-583 (reproduced p. 581). The present subject appears to be later in life dates than both of those Heberdens
