    Confervce (7). — These are filiform alg^e, which are widely distributed in all ponds, rivers, and reservoirs, being especially abun- dant near the margins. They are character- istic of water comparatively poor in organic matter. were constructed. 7. Crenothrix (or Leptothrix) Kuhni' ana (8).—This organism is common in running or stagnant water that is rich in organic matter. The threads are motile, and in their younger stages are grouped into little patches. They have a greenish or brownish colour, and impart the same tint to the water. If a reservoir is infected with them, large quantities of water may be deteriorated in a short time. The luxuriant growth of this organism at the Berlin water-works proved so troublesome that fresh filter - beds It developed to a thickness of some feet
