Since the cefTation of this eruption, I have examined the crater, and the crack on the fide of the mountain to¬ wards 'Torre dell* Annunciata, about a hundred yards from the crater from whence this lava bailed : and I found therein fome very curious falts and fulphurs *, a fpecimen of each iort I have put into bottles myfelf, evep upon the mountain, that they might not lofe any of their force, and have fent them in a box directed to your Lord- Ihip, as you will fee by the bill of lad¬ ing r I am fare, you will have a pleafure in feeing them analyzed [<?]. I have alfo packed in the fame box fome lava, and cin¬ ders, of the laft eruption ; there is one piece in particular very curious, having the exafi appearance of a cable petrified.
