If Dr Cullen has not been more successful-than his predecessors in establishing those general prin- ciples of pathology which are necessary to form a system, his good sense' has always restrained him from applying his theoretical opinions in opposition to the results of a rational experience; and his First Lines abound more with broad facts and sound views than any other systematic work. The additional matter contained in the Supple- ment has, wherever it coidd be done with propriety, been transcribed from original authorities, as it must be read with much more interest in the words of the authors themselves, and serve at the same tinie to in- troduce the student to those works which he is most likely to consult with advantage. The editor is ful- ly sensible how little he can claim from the execu- tion of such a very humble task, however useful; but he has no new facts to produce, and he has no notion of swelling the size of the book by that kind of medical discussion, which to some looks plausible enough on paper, but is dismissed as altogether use- • less at the bed-side of a patient, or only retained by' very young practitioners in their first essays at a consultation. .
