    REPORT OF THE MEDICAIi OFFICER OF HEALTH 4th September, 1967 To the Chairman and Members of the Formhy Urban District Council, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, As required by the Public Health Officers’ Regulations 1959, 1 have pleasure in submitting the annual report on the sanitary circumstances and administration of the district for the year ending 31st December, 1966. Details and statistics relating to the work of the Public Health Inspector are included in the report. Formby was constituted an Urban District in 1905, having previously been a parish in the West Lancashire Rural District. From an area with a population of 6,000 at that date, natural residential development has taken place. The population is now more than 17,000 and further expansion can be expected. This is indicated by the fact that during 1966 a record total of 620 houses were built, and many more are still under con- struction. As a residential area Formby has much to commend it, being attractively situated at the estuary of the Mersey and within easy access of both Liverpool and Southport. The health of the district has remained good, and the incidence of minor infectious disease has been remarkably low. Only 19 cases of measles and 4 cases of whooping cough were reported. Although there has been a general decline in the incidence of respiratory tuberculosis, it is regretted that a year seldom passes without a few cases being notified; during 1966 there were four primary cases. The steady increase of population in the area has continued. This is mainly due to the movement of people into the district as a result of the progress in housing development. Another contributing factor is the high birth rate, which has reached a new level of 24.3 per 1,000 population, combined with the death rate which, at 8.6 per 1,000 population, is the lowest recorded for many years. The general standard of housing in the district is good, and the small number of sub-standard houses is gradually being reduced, either by demolition or improvement. -2-
