Inter- course should therefore take place a day or two before the calculated date of ovulation, and false) during the week following. PART TWO How Treatment Can Help Now let us consider what can be done in the case of a childless couple to find out what may have gone wrong in the mechanism and put it right. There is no fixed time when a couple should seek expert advice, but if they have tried for six to nine months to have a pregnancy without success, quite a lot of help can then be given before any special investigations need be carried out. (1) Penetration First of all the doctor wili ask whether intercourse is comfortable and complete. Sometimes a couple have never understood that the penis should pass right into the woman’s front passage. In virgins the entrance is partiy covered by the hymen or “‘ maidenhead,” a fold of tissue which should yield to the pressure of the entering penis. Sometimes the hymen is tough and intercourse is never properly completed. The pain of attempting it sometimes frightens the wife so that her thighs stiffen and her muscles contract until penetration becomes impossible.
