This implies, that a Man is to look upon, himfelf as obliged to do fome good in his Life * not Lent into the World barely to take his Pa- ftime herein-, not born for himfelf, nor to live for himfelf, to feek his own, and that only, but every one his Brother s Wealth. And, according to this Description, it is not every flafh of good Nature, or every eafy Con- ceffion wrung out by dint of Importunity, or force of Example, that deferves to be accounted a iuft Expreffion of this Duty. It fhould be al-. ways the Refult of a fix’d, and habitual Bene¬ volence, of fuch a Goodnefs and Tendernefs of Mind as neither wants nor waits for. Provo¬ cation, but is at all Times ready, of its own Accord, to look out and feek for Opportunities of doing good to the Souls or Bodies of Men ; and, when fuch Opportunities are either found or do prefent themfelves, performs^the proper Office, not grudgingly, or as of Necemty, but with abounding Chearfulnefs becoming the Service of God, who loveth the chearjul and rewardeth the willing and obedient Servant.
