![IMPORTED MEAT Check inspections of imported meat in Wholesale Depots were carried out during the year. In all, 114 visits were paid to Wholesale Depots, and as a result of the inspections 15 cwts.of carcase meat, 1 cvt. of offal, 25 tins of cooked meats weighing 2 cwts. and 5 poultry carcases weighing 25 lbs. were found to be unfit for consumption. EXPORT OF MEAT PRODUCTS During the year the Veterinary Officer issued licences to gut-scraping firms for 108 tierces (42 gallon casks) of hog casings, 82 tierces of beef casings, 110 hanks of sheep casings, 1 drum of Oleo, and 5 cwts. of ox cheek for shipment abroad, following visits to the factories and inspection of the products. SLAUGHTER OF ANIMALS ACT 1955 The stunning and slaughtering of animals in a slaughterhouse is prohibited except under licence granted by the Local Authority. As at 31st December 1963 there'were 48 slaughtermen's licences in force. PET ANIMALS ACT 1931 This Act regulates the sale of pet animals and makes it an offence to keep a Pet Shop except under the authority of a licence granted by the Local Authority. These shops are visited regularly to ensure compliance with the conditions of the licence. During the year 80 visits were made and 12 licences were issued. REGISTRATION OF PREMISES USED FOR THE SALE OF ANIMAL FEEDING MEAT j ■ The Birkenhead Corporation Act, Section 98, regulates the sale of animal feeding meat and provides for the registration ; of approved premises. One application for registration was received and approved, and one registration was cancelled when ' the business concerned terminated. There were 16 such registered i premises in the Borough as at 31st December 1963. MEAT (STAINING AND STERILISATION) REGULATIONS 1960 i During the year 72 visits were paid to premises registered ! for the sale of animal feeding meat under the provisions of the jabove Regulations. Aproximately 12 tons of inedible liver l| (1883 cartons) were released from Cold Store to be taken !directly to heat-treatment plant outside the town for •i sterilisation. 1 I MERCHANDISE MARKS ACT 1926 ] Orders made under the above Act, as applied to certain I classes of chilled, frozen, boneless and salted meats and edible I offals, provide that such foodstuffs shall bear an indication !of origin, a further object of the Orders being to ensure that I such foodstuffs shall be easily identified when exposed for j sale.
