    PREFACE. AT a time when parts of Europe are suffering severely from cholera, and the whole Con- tinent both of Europe and America is alarmed at the threatened advance of the epidemic, a few of the great facts showing what has been the experience of India in regard to this disease are deserving of special attention. And with these Indian facts it may be useful to recall the great facts regarding the history of cholera in other countries which are little known to the general public, and the significance of which is commonly misunderstood. The following pages in which I have discussed this subject were commenced with the intention of their forming an Introduction to the Twentieth Annual Re- port of the Sanitary Commissioner with the Government of India,—the last of these reports with which I shall have to do,—but as the work increased beyond the convenient limits of an Introduction, it was resolved to issue it in a separate form.
