    hands of mechanics, it is nevertheless one of great importance, when we consider the in- fluence which civilization, and the aggrega- tion of mankind in large towns, have on the human form. It is quite evident, that the farther we are removed from a state of nature, the more numerous do cases of con- genital deformity become. Animals in a wild state very rarely indeed produce mon- strosities, and those which have been long domesticated and have completely relinquish- ed their natural habits, present the most frequent instances of malformation. Dogs, cats, and the domestic fowls, more especi- ally illustrate the truth of these observa- tions. If we would prevent the increase of de- formities among our children, we must pay more attention to their physical education, than has been the fashion in this country.
