    amounts of the alkanes. “Low temperature tar” obtained by heating soft coal at about 600° contains alkanes which, at higher temperatures, are converted to aromatic substances. The crack- ing of cotton seed oil gives a gas containing 35% methane, 12% ethane and 5% propane and a liquid distillate containing 37% of higher alkanes. The methods of preparation of the alkanes will be given under the individual members of the series. Petroleum consists of complex mixtures of hydrocarbons con- cerning the nature of which there is very little information. Indications are that all these materials contain members of the methane series, the polymethylene series and the benzene series of hydrocarbons. The general composition of crude petroleums from different sources may be indicated by the following chart (Gruse 1928). Many petroleum fractions contain hydrocarbons more deficient in hydrogen than any known series. These extend to C„H2„_2o (EP 28). There is no conclusive evidence that any natural petroleum contains members of the olefin series. The difference
