    Spiritus ^theris Nitrosi. (Formerly Spiritus Athens Nitrici. Ph. Lond., Edin.) Prepared by distilling sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and rectified spirit. C^HjO.NOj. Sp.gr. 0'845. Action.—Diuretic, diaphoretic, stimulant, and slightly antispasmodic. In catarrh, influenza, cardiac dropsy, &c. Dose.—For an adult, iilxx to fSij. For a child a year old, itiiij to niv. Incompatibles.—Protosalts of iron and the preparations of guaiacum, alkaline, and earthy carbonates, iodide of potassium. ALBUMEN OVI. The liquid white of the egg of Gallus Banckiva var. domesticus. ALCOHOL AMYLICUM. Fousel oil. Sp. gr. 818. Described as “an oily liquid, contained in the crude spirit produced by the fermentation of saccharine solu- tions with yeast.” It is illegal to use it in the prepa- ration of tinctures. ALLIUM SATIVA. The bulb of the common Garlic. Action and Uses.—Stimulant, antispasmodic, ex- pectorant, and diuretic. Useful in hooping-cough, asthma, and other pulmonary affections. In India it is used in intermittent fevers ; also as a vermi- fuge. Dose.—For an adult, one or more bulbs. ALOE BABBADENSIS. The juice of the leaf of Aloe vulgaris. Action and Uses.—In the doses given below for the preparations of aloes the action is powerfully purgative
