![PREFACE. An apparently unlimited interruption having taken place in my professional life, the idea occurred of reprinting my various medical contributions for private circulation. Yielding to the advice of several friends, I have consented to the issue of a larger edition for regular sale. In offering these articles, etc., to the profession I need make no apology, because I do it in the same spirit that led me to pub- lish them separately. I have, I hope, a due appreciation of the faults in some of the essays, of the shortcomings of many others, and of the fact that some of them possess only an historical in- terest. The redeeming feature in the collection will perhaps be the series of observed facts, faithfully recorded, which may prove of some use to the practical physician as well as to the pathol- ogist. ^ithout an editor this volume could not have appeared. I desire to thank my friend Dr. Amidon for the patience and accuracy he has shown in the ]3erformance of his task, which involved among other things the reduction of all measures to the metric and centigrade scales, and the verification of every refer- ence.
