![The proportion of illegitimate births to every 1,000 births registered during the past seven years is:—- 1912 ... 35 1914 ... 35 1916 ... 55 1913 ... 39 1915 ... 43 1917 ... 63 1918 ... 64 The proportion in England and Wales in 1918 was 62, the average before the war being 39 The increase in the number of illegitimate births affects the r^te of infantile mortality, as will be seen in the statistics given under that heading. DEATHS, The death-rate of the Borough for the year s 1918 amounted to 17.92 per 1,000. This rate is 3.47 higher than in the previous year and 3.79 above the average for the pevious seven years. This increased mortality was entirely due to the Influenza epidemic in the autumn, and in order to And so high a death- rate it is necessary to go back to 1899, when the death-rate was 19.1 Further details of the epidemic are given later on in the report. The total number of deaths from all causes registered in the Borough amounted to 2,321, compared with 1,743 in 1917. Of this number 11S were deaths of non-residents and 285 were soldiers, and are deducted from the total. On the other hand, 131 deaths of residents of the Borough occurred in other districts in England and have been transferred to the total occurring in the Borough. The corrected total of deaths, therefore, is 2,049, the highest total yet registered. The deaths of males amounted to 1,066 and of females to 983.
