    The glands beneath the ear likewise swell, and may inflame and break. Treatment.— Wash the head thoroughly, first with water, and then with vinegar, and apply the following ointment. White Precipitate Ointment, 2 drachms. Red Precipitate Ointment, 2 drachms. Soft. Paraffin, 4 drachms. MEASLES,—This must be distinguished from scarlet fever. The onset is not so sudden, the temperature rarely reaches so high ; it is, moreover, accompanied by cold in the head, and very often bleeding from the nose. A cough and wheezing usuallythen comeon. ‘The rash appears on the fourth day about the forehead first, and then passes to the body, forming an eruption with a crescentic outline. It isof a darker colour than that of scarlet fever; it lasts generally only four days, and then the skin comes off in fine powder, scarcely perceptible; the discharge from the nose gets thicker, and convalescence is reached. TrEaTMENT.—Avoid the cold by keeping in bed and the room warm. No medicine will be required until con- valescence, then give Parrish’s Chemical Food, 1 ounce. Cod-liver Oil, 1 ounce. Extract of Malt, 1 ounce. A dessertspoonful twice a day, between meals._ MUMPS.—This commences with a feeling of indis- position. A swelling is then noticed just beneath the lobule of the ear; difficulty is experienced in opening the jaw, and soon the swelling fills up the cavity behind the angle of the jaw, extending a little way under it. Generally the swelling commences in the same way on the other side, producing a bilateral affection. Slight fever accompanies it. me illness begins to subside in about six days. | Treatment.—Confinement to oneroom and a slop diet are indicated. Use fomentations with flannel wrung out of. hot water. A fomentation of camomiles and poppy heads usually gives instant relief. The following Mixture should be taken. Bicarbonate of Soda, 14 drachms. Compound tincture of Cardamoms, 1 fluid drachm. Syrup of Ginger, 4 fluid ounce. Infusion of Calumba to make 8 ounces. Take two tablespoonfuls twice a day. NETTLERASH.—This skin disease is characterised by its appearance ‘resembling the result of a sting from a nettle; it is usually intensely irritating, but it only lasts a few hours.
