    PREFACE. The Spanish Manuscripts in the British Museum are very niimerons, and comprise important State correspond- ence and official papers, as well as valuable works in general literature. But, having been acquired from time to time, the descriptions of them have to be sought in many different catalogues; where also they are often only briefly noticed. It has therefore been hardly possible to obtain either a just view of the extent and character of the collection, or an accurate knowledge of the contents of particular volumes. This difficulty in the way of using the manuscripts was represented to the Trustees by Don Pascual de Gayangos, at the close of the year 1867; and he submitted the scheme of a special Catalogue of the whole collection. The project was approved by the Trustees, and the pre- sent volume is the first part of the work undertaken by him under their authority. The Catalogue will contain descriptions of all the Manu- scripts, Letters, and State Papers, in the Spanish language, acquired at various times to the end of the year 1867, with an Appendix for subsequent additions. The manuscripts are described in classes, under heads of subjects. But the classification has been only partially
