Editio princeps of a compilation of laws regarding knights and hidalgos ex- tracted from the lawbooks of Castile, the first to contain the rules and formalities of combat between Knights-Errant, by Alfonso Garcia de Santa Maria, bishop of Car- tagena and eventually of Burgos (1384-1456), who was the son of an illustrious Jewish convert Pablo de Santa Maria, his predecessor on the see of Burgos. He was one of the most influential ecclesiastics in Spain and a famous poet and troubadour and author of many amorous compositions. The book is remarkable for the typographical beauty of its impression. An ex- ceptionally well preserved copy with wide margins. A superb copy. THE FIRST LATIN-SPANISH DICTIONARY 7. A magnificent copy of the first Latin-Spanish dictionary ever printed, compiled by the chronicler Alfonso de Palencia. It is the first production of the press of the “Compafieros Alemanes”, Paulus de Colonia, Johannes Pegnitzer of Nuremberg, Thomas Glockner, and Johannes Herbst of Fils, who printed it by order of Queen Isabella of Spain. Alphonso Fernandez of Palencia, a diplomat attached to Prince Alphonso, the younger brother and rival of King Henry IV of Castile, had received a classical educa- tion as a pupil of the foremost Greek humanists in Italy and was much interested in linguistic problems. He gives, for the first time, definitions and etymologies of Span- ish words. He is also known as the author of a chronicle of the reign of king John II, written in a queer bombastic Latin style, which is still unpublished in its original language.
