![disease. A few simple rules being observed—judicious daily ablution—cold water the only drink—plain unstimulating food in proper quantity—the giving up of all stimulants—an avoid- ance of overheated and unventilated rooms—a suitable amount of daily appropriate open air exercise—regularity and mod- eration in all the habits of life,—the certain and natural conse- quence would speedily prove, throughout society, to be a compara- tive immunity from bodily suffering and disease. In the belief that a small volume on this subject would in some degree aid in bringing about the great good which the water-cure system must sooner or later be a means of accomplishing on this side the Atlantic, the work before us has been prepared. It has been an object to give a concise general view of the treat- ment, in its present state of improvement. As will be easily seen, it does not possess originality. It has been gathered up from a variety of sources, and this without designing to be a voucher for the scientific accuracy of every thing contained. Without further comment or apology, the work, such as it is, is left to tell its own story. J. o. Broadway, New-York, April, 1844. [advertisement.] Those who care to examine hydropathy more at large, and with reference to the opinions of various authors on the principles and philosophy involved in the treatment, are referred to a larger work, entitled Hydropathy, or the Water-Cure; its Principles, Modes of Treatment, &c, illustrated by Many Cases, compiled chiefly from the most eminent English au- thors on the subject, recently issued by the publishers of the present volume.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21153838_0009.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
