    fome advantage from the diuretic effect of Digitalis, though that quality cannot be uniformly relied on. Whenever an effufion takes place, whether in the bronchia?, cellular mem- brane of the Jungs, or the inverting pleura, and proves a caufe of cough and dyfpncea, we ought certainly to look for relief to this clafs of remedies. And that fuch effufions mult exift, when the circulation through the lungs is impeded, by alterations of their rtrufture, we are abundantly inrtru6ted by difle£tions. In this view, I was influenced by the maxim of Baglivi, whom I have found a fure guide, in his practical remarks ; in mortis pstioris femper ducendum ejj'c ad vias urines. Squills, as I have obferved elfewhere, probably owe much of their efficacy, in pectoral complaints, to their diuretic power. In the more advanced ftages of confumption, I fuppofed that the he£tic fever might be mitigated, in fome degree, by the ufe of Foxglove,
