![ible, it is necessary to point out that his method of printing it gives a very misleading idea of the extent of the collection. He makes it consist of 698 volumes; I estimate the number at something near 1850. It is clearly necessary that I should explain at length how so glaring a discrepancy has arisen. We will take a paragraph of Edwards’s edition : it reads thus: [cclvii] In hoc volumine continentur: Liber Regum Ysaias propheta Ieremias propheta Duodecim parvi prophete. [cclviii] Libri R. de la Lee: Summa provincialis Expositio super psalterium Itinerarium Geraldi. [cclix] hi hoc volumine continentur: Descriptio Cambrie Summa I. de Abevile etc. Thus Edwards’s practice is to place the beginning of a new volume wherever he finds a rubric in the manuscript. Let me now quote the above passage in the form in which it appears in the manuscript. IT Quinque libri Moysi In hoc uolumine continentur: Liber Regum Ysaias propheta Ieremias propheta Duodecim parui prophete. Libri R. de la Lee: Summa prouincialis Expositio super psalterium IT Itinerarium Geraldi In hoc volumine continentur: Descriptio Cambrie Summa I. de Abevile etc. The system of the monastic cataloguer will partially appear from this extract.
