Manuscript of the XVII Century, neatly written. Sm. 4to, bound in contemporary calf, the date 1634 tooled in small gold letters at top of upper cover, with the initials J.[ames] H.lope] and the half length representation of James I. tooled in gold on both covers. £8 15s This manuscript is in the handwriting of James (afterwards Str James) Hore who was a student at the University of Edinburgh from 1632 to 1685. He has carefully noted in this volume the lectures given by Professor Ranken with the dates on which they were delivered. The last lecture was delivered on 10 February 1634. On page 709 Hope has inscribed his name Iacosus Horus in large block letters. Sir James Hope, was one of the sons of Sir Thomas Hope, Lord Advocate. He was himsel} a distinguished lawyer, and, also found time to develope the lead mines on his estate. The gilt figure on the binding is probably intended to represent James I. who was so splendid a pairon to Edinburgh University.
