![backward, towards the top of her fhoulders, What were the effects of thefe bold-—thefe great operations?—They were moft happy!—They appeared miraculous!—-They fnatch,ed an amiable young perfon-— an ufeful member of fociety 1 may fay, from the^ very bottom ot the grave. What would ordinary medicines—-what would, what is called the regular practice, have done in this defperate cafe ?---why- nothing. The patient must inevitably have died. Flow very fortunate it was for Mils Beatt that I was perfonally prefent to diredt the proper exhibition of the three great medicines—-to which under God! the owes her life! In a quarter of an hour, from the time that the aetherial balfam was firft given to her,---fhe broke out into a general perforation; her pulfe was better;--the fulnefs, ehoaking, and inability of fwallowing went off; the rattles ceafed. At th^ end oi another half hour, all thefe favourable appearances were more ftrikingly m.inifefted and at the expiration of one hour more, fo rapidly did the cold numbnefs' and fleepinefs gooff, and the mor- tification, and putrefaction abate, that 1 conceived her to be even out of all danger. The putrid morbid matter which had fallen inward, and carried death to every veffel and fibre of the fyftem being now fo much overcome and fubdued by the nervous aetherial balfam, and eleddrical aether, I was determined to lofe no time in carrying as much of it as poffible out of the body. For that purpofe, as Mifs Beatt could not be fuppofed to be as yet capable of fwallowing pills— and even if fhe could, it would.have been a confiderable time before they could have difTolved in her ftomach: I therefore diflolved nine of my imperial PILLS in a proper vehicle, and gave the whole of them to her in the fpace of an hour. The confequence was, that they operated fo properly and effeaually, that I ventured to leave her that fame night, being called into the city to attend to fome cafes of great importance. I had ordered my fervant to enquire after Mifs Beatt by fix in the morning, and a gentleman, (a furgeon in the Faff-India Company’s fervice) who had the goodnefs to fit up all night, being on a vifit at Mr. Schroedei s, (and to whofe kind and judicious care we were all very muen indebted,) fent me word that Mifs Beatt was amazingly better, that fhe had flept fweetly great part of the night, that fhe was en refiefhedland cheerful, with both her eyes quite open, and every unfavourable fymptom entirely gone off. 3 I ft all not trefpafs any longer on my reader’s time; ftffice it to allure him that by continuing the medicines, &c. in one week or ten ys more Mifs Beatt came down ftairs quite recovered.
