    from which they are educed. These hypotheses are like questions which we put to Nature, but the answers she gives are not simply “ yes’ and “no;” but it can be so, or it cannot. Nevertheless, from these hypotheses deductions may generally be drawn which ean subsequently be confirmed or refuted by further observations. In proportion to the number of facts that can be explained by help of an hypothesis, and the more we can confirm it by new observations, the greater probability does it acquire. In all branches of physics we shall find examples of, and evidence favouring the correctness of these views.
