![[9] or Leykrus, who speak much of him, and pre¬ serve some of his poems ; particularly Wolfius, in his curious work, which he calls Lectiones Memorabiles^ in two large volumes folio. This literary anecdote, however, is established by Rustkien de Pise, who lived soon after Walter de Mapes, and who translated several of the Ro¬ mances in these collections of MSS. by order of Henry III. Am0112: them there is one, Le Roman de Tristan de Leonnoys, translated from a MS. preserved at Salisbury, by Luce, de Chat el du Gat. Of this literary character it is believed that nothing is yet known; although every one knows the high rank that the family of Luce or Lucy, held in this country in those times. But a still more un¬ known person is mentioned as a translator of these Romances, in the preface to one of them, M. Gasses li Blons qui Parens fu de Roi Henry.” These anecdotes are only mentioned here, to induce Mr. Douce, or some other learned admirer of the early literature of this country, to investigate them. These MSS. the.Duke read with great facility, and with uncommon accuracy, as may be seen from a note written with his own hand, and in¬ serted in the* book it refers to, wherein he con¬ troverts the opinion of Adrien Baillet, author of the Jugemens des Samns, who had called itZe Ro¬ man du Roi Artus, whereas the Duke has shown it to be Le Roman du Roi Meliadus de Leonnoys.
