    of vomiting, diarrhoea and cramps, he never had either the coldness or the cyanosis. Then, about the second day, his intelligence, which had till then remained clear, was in turn affected; there was none of the slowness of ideas of cholera patients in the algide stage, there were, on the contrary, loquacity, incoherence in the ideas, and then some hallucina- tions of sight, which became more powerful in the evening, were exaggerated during the night, and tended to disappear in the morning. Under their influence the patient got up and tried to go out of the ward, not knowing either what he was doing or where he was; his hands were tremulous, his walk undecided, his look uncertain and stupified. For three days he remained in this condition; after which abundant perspirations appeared as a sort of crisis, and he entered into a complete convales- cence.* We might furnish several examples of alcoholic delirium (delirium tremens) which has come on under the influence of an intercurrent disease, such as erysipelas, pericarditis, rheumatism, pneumonia, &c.t * Mesnet, Cholera de 1865 ; Saint Antoine Hospital (Male wards). In this work will be found mentioned two cases of articular rheumatism and a case of pneumonia with alcoholic delirium, observed under the care of Prof. Bouillaud ab the Charite. (It may be questioned whether in these and other cases of the kind, the delirium is really always due to alcohol, although the symptoms and character of the deli- rium may closely resemble those of delirium tremens, especially in acute pneumonia, and rheumatic pericarditis and pneumonia. Further details and references to authorities on the subject, are given in a paper on Insanity as a sequel of acute disease and hasmorrhage in St. Thomas's Hospital ReporiSj vol. iv. 1873. Trans.)
