![[ * ] It is the bark of a tree, very frequently to be met with in the mountainous parts of Jamaica, which grows to a confiderable height. The bark is of an am colour, fome- times fpotted with reddilh, or iron coloured fpots.—The outer thin bark, or epidermis, being peeled off, the inner bark appears, when dry, of a rutty iron colour, and its interior furface of a cineritious hue. Al- together, when Gripped off the tree, and kept for ufe, it is not unlike the eleutheria, or cafcarilla bark. The wood of the baftard cabbage-tree is exceedingly hard and durable, and much ufed for the purpofes of building where ftrength and liability are required. The leaves are oblong, oval, fmooth, and of a beautiful green colour, difpofed in a pin- nate form along the ftem. Of this tree, there are two forts, the male, and the female. The bark of the female only is applied to the purpofes of medicine.
