In doing this, I have to acknowledge the kind and ready assistance of one or two friends, to whom the antiquarianism of this country owes much of its progress at the present day; and, although by far the greater part of the illustrations were engraved expressly for this work, and are due to the skilful ]Dcncil of ]\Ir, Fairholt, I have availed myself of the offers of Mr. Bruce of Newcastle, to lend me some of the cuts from his excellent work on the Boman Wall, and of Mr. Eoach Smith, who similarly placed at my disposal the cuts of his Collectanea, and of his recent work on the antiquities of E-ichborough, Eeculver, and Lymue.
