![The history of the generic name, Hassallia, is interesting. Proposed in 1845 by Berkeley,^ and containing five species (the last two doubtful)—Hassallia ocellata, H. compacta, H. turfosa, H. byssoidea, and H. limbata—the genus Hassallia was later (1848) newly defined by Count Vittore B. A. Trevisan, who, pointing out that Berkeley’s Hassallia was identical with Sirosiphon, Kiitz. (1843), applied the name to some other forms of algae. Count Trevisan’s classification is quoted here, nearly verbatim, from his work on the subject ‘ [Protococce^, Tribus I. Polycocce^, Tribus II.] ‘ CoccochloridecB, Tribus III. ‘ XIX. Genere.—Hassallia. ‘ Thallus e cellulis protogeniis cryptococcodeis sphaerico- ellipticis, themnogenesi simplici homogenea appendiculari multiplicatis, inordinatim et confertim dispositis, strato gela- tinoso obvolutis, compositus. ‘ II genere Hassallia proposto da Berkeley, e pubblicato nel 1854 (in Hassall “A Hist, of the Brit. Freshw. Alg.,” p. 231), e identico col Sirosiphon di Kiitzing (“ Ph3’col. gener.,” p. 2ig), fondato nel 1843. ‘ Erythneae:— ^Hassallia Hookeriana.
