    Sir Charles Tomes and others Examination in 1881, a preliminary to regis- tering as a Dental Student, 1 commenced to serve my articles of apprenticeship with Mr. Arnold Pitowsky, a dentist and member of the Odontological Society of Great Britain, then conducting a very good practice in the beautifully situated town of Barnstaple, in North Devon. One of my first duties was to keep the extraction forceps in good condition, and my attention was particularly directed to the fact that these instruments were especially valued as being the handiwork of Mr. Everard, and made by him as copies of the very best patterns, those designed by the cele- brated Mr. John Tomes of London. Some of them are now in my possession. In 1888, when walking down Baker Street to attend at Charing Cross and the Dental Hospital in Leicester Square, I frequently passed a tall, well- built, handsome, brown-bearded gentleman striding along towards Upper Baker Street leading by the hand a remarkably pretty, tawny-haired child. One day a fellow-student said that was Mr. Charles S. Tomes taking his daughter to her school. I presented myself for the L.D.S. examination in A FTER passing the Senior Cambridge Local
