Antidotarius. ff. 32b-41. III. Expositiones nominum Arabicorum. ff. 41b-43. 14th century manuscript written in Italy in a fine Gothic hand in red and black. Double columns (last part three columns). 43 leaves. Measuring 7% by 102 inches. In the original monastic binding of boards covered with white leather. I. Preface begins: ‘‘Vertillatum fuit in presentia.’’ Text begins: ‘“‘ (Primum) Ex eis itaque est capitulum ” andends : “ delent vestigia earum.” II. Begins: ‘‘ Dixi in hoc meo libro” and ends: “‘ movetur bene et utile.” This codex contains important writings by the great Arabic physician. The Liber Divisionum, divided into 159 chapters, is a great compendium of medicine similar to his celebrated Almansor. The Antidotarius is an important pharma- cological work on the composition and production of remedies. (See the detailed account in Schelenz, pp. 277-278). The last part contains a dictionary of Arabic terms. There are two flyleaves from a 14th century manuscript containing a portion of a theological treatise which we have not been able to identify. Rodler, 1531 £30 Folio. Old vellum (new endpapers). 46 leaves, including the last blank. Gothic characters. Title printed in red and black with a large woodcut showing goldsmiths, a painter and an embroiderer at work. Large woodcut printer’s device at end and 55 fine large woodcuts and diagrams throughout the text. This beautiful book on perspective and design 1s largely based on Diirer’s great work on the subject and was intended by the author as a more practical handbook of the art to serve as an introduction to the larger book. Written for the use of painters, goldsmiths, embroiderers, carpenters and masons, tt 1s most beautifully lustrated with large woodcuis. In some cases the lines of perspective are super- tmposed in red on the picture. The pictures of the intertor of houses are extremely interesting, as are also those showing scaffolding for building and joiners at work. The book is one of the earliest printed at the small town of Simmern (in the Rhineland), where Rodler set up a press in 1530. 3 179 ROMANCERO HISTORIADO ... recopilado por Lucas Rodriguez. Alcala, Hernan Ramirez, 1581 £50 8vo. Full 19th century citron morocco, sides line tooled, gilt back. 290 leaves, the last blank. One of the rarest collections of old Spanish ballads. It seems to be the first edition, an edition of 1579 being mythical (see Palau V I., 312). The book ts particularly attractive on account of 52 charming woodcuts of an extremely rough and popular character such as were probably used for broadsheets. A good many of the woodcuts are repeats or composed by piecing together different portions of the block. , The present copy, coming from the Huth and Yemeniz libraries, appears to be the only one known. There is no copy in the British Museum.
