The second English edition of this celebrated compendium of surgery. Written in the 15th century, wt remained for two hundred years the chief surgical textbook and 1s therefore of the greatest mportance to us as showing the state of surgical knowledge at the beginning of the 16th century. “‘ It was almost the only book before Paré’s time which dealt with the two great problems of Renatssance surgery, epidemic syphilis and wounds from firearms. Vigo had taught that such wounds were porsoned burns and therefore should be treated with a first dressing of boiling otl.”—(GARRISON.) It 1s satd that a copy of the French edition of this book fell into Paré’s hands when a young man, and inspired him in his own later work. The title is very slightly soiled and some of the outer margins are rather closely cut resulting in a few letters of the marginalia being shaved, but a very sound pleasing copy. First and very rare edition of the complete works of Virgil by Johannes Badius. No copy in the Bibliotheque Nationale. The British Museum only possesses one part out of the three. Old ved morocco gilt, gilt back a little faded. 2 volumes bound in one. 10 W., 205 ff., 1 blank leaf, 8 ll., 324 ff., 10 ll. Title printed in red and black within a decorative woodcut border. A serves of woodcut tmitial letters throughout. With about 200 very fine woodcuts, most of which are either full or half-page. These beautiful illustrations are taken from the original blocks, made for the Griininger edition (Strassburg, 1502) and belong to the finest and most interesting early German cuts. They are full of life and character and are also of great historical interest as showing a great variety of occupations and amusements. We mention only representations of bee-keeping, building, reaping, ploughing, playing of musical instruments, shooting with crossbows, boat-building, smithing, grafting, playing cards, military engagements.
