    A fine edition of the works of Virgil, translated into French verse with the printed marginal notes in Latin. The book is most richly illustrated. The fine ~ title border 1s of pure Renaissance design, showing on top the Royal Arms and is supported by columns at the sides, while the lower part shows another coat of arms supported by two lions, showing the lily and the initials IP. The name Petit 1s repeated four times in this border. The pastoral and agricultural scenes of the Georgics and Eclogues are illustrated with most interesting woodcuts, showing all kinds of country pursuits and the Aeneid also has many fine woodcuts. Old calf. 184 leaves, including 2 blanks. Woodcut portrait on title. First French Edition. Illustrated with very many beautiful woodcuts and plates by Jean Goujon. Goujon, about whose life little 1s known, belonged to the circle of artists round Cousin and Palissy. The designs for the woodcuts of this book are certainly by him, but it 1s doubtful whether he also engraved all of them himself. Some are probably engraved by Jean Barbé. Two of the cuts showing human figures are clearly influenced by Michelangelo. With this 1s bound “‘ Reigles generales de architecture sur les cing mantéres d’edtfices . . . composite selon la doctrine de Vitruve. Anvers, Pierrevan Aelst, 1545.” 71 leaves (should be 72 ; the last leaf is missing). 212 WIMPFELING (Jacob) Philippica. Strassburg, Martin Schott, 1498 £6/10/- Ato. Half vellum. 14 leaves. Roman characters. 34 lines. Woodcut coat of arms on title and printer's device at end. An interesting work by the great humanist written in the form of dialogues. These dialogues were actually recited by students at the castle of Heidelberg im _— October, 1498. They deal with the humanistic education of the ruling Princes and the advantages and values of a scholarly and enlightened attitude on their part for — the people they rule. The author complains about the general ignorance and the lack of interest in humanistic tdeals, which he even holds responsible for the failure — of the rulers of Europe to eliminate the Turkish danger.
