Thecuts representing e.g. the author kneeling and offering his work to Tiberius, Horatius Cocles on the bridge Sublicius, the death of Lucrezia, etc.—Title and margins of first leaves stained, smaller dampstains on the margins of several leaves, last leaves with some waterstains. Rare first edition of this posthumous work, published by the author’s nephew, Giorgio Vasari—sSlight waterstains in the lower margins of first leaves, blank portion of title repaired, otherwise good copy. 100. VEGETIUS, Flavius.( De re milita1i, in German). Vier bucher der Ritterschafft, mit manicherleyen gertisten, bolwerken un gebewen als Biichsen, Katzen, Antriben.... zu Kryeg- -sleuffen geh6rig, mit iren mustern unnd fyguren darneben verzaychnet. 4 leaves, 30 leaves, 66 leaves. With 180 full- page woodcuts, two other large woodcuts, a large woodcut on the title-page and another full-page cut on v. of title, repre- senting a solendidly dressed soldier plumed and with halberd. Folio. Vellum. Augsburg, H. Steyner, 1534. Frs. 225. The excellent woodcuts in this book are most interesting documents — of early engineering. The cuts depict engines of war. Among these engines we notice: armoured cars like tanks, a diver with a helmet, and artillery (among these a curious arrangement of 8 guns on a revol- ving platform, for quickfiring like a modern machine-gun), scaling- ladders, battering rams, etc. etc. The artists who designed the cuts are unknown, but several are attributed to Hans Knapp. A few waterstains on three leaves, but a very fine copy with excellent impressions.—See reproduction p. 44.
