![These numbers embrace all classes of Patients—recent, cbrc epileptic, and paralysed ; but so high a rate of cure would have been realised had not the recent Cases been comparati numerous. From the Union of Bakewell [embracing 107 acres, and a population of 29,880], fifty-one Patients only ] been sent during a corresponding period of time; of these a la - proportion were chronic or epileptic, and the Cures were lesse* in a corresponding degree, the per centage of Cures being as- lows :— Bakewell, 51 Admissions... 14 discharged Cured, or rather n than one quarter per cent. Derby ...181 Admissions... 65 discharged Cured, or very ne< •36 per cent. Moreover, it must alarm the dwellers in large towns to that in the Derby Union [population 43,684] one person annu in about 1,700 of the population becomes Insane; whereas ir Bakewell Union, judging from the admissions into the Coi Asylum, not one person in four thousand of the population is afflicted with Mental Derangement. Large towns contribute the development of Insanity, but not to such a degree as ia plied in the above Statistics. Although the Legislatures beneficently enacted that all poor persons becoming In should be removed for treatment to the Lunatic Hospital ol County, yet the Act is so often evaded, that the Admissions; not be regarded as a test of the amount of Insanity prevails the respective districts from which the Patients are sent. Dr the past year, no recent case of Insanity has been received! the Asylum from the large and wealthy Union of Bakewell; one person lias been admitted, and that a poor, frantic, incui epileptic Patient, who had severely cut and bruised herself,' had endeavoured to strangle and injure others, prior to removal from the Workhouse.
