    He is encouraged to hope, that he has not been altogether unsuccessful in his undertaking, from the rapid circulation of the work, and from the favourable manner in which it has been re- ceived by those who are highly qualified to judge. In preparing a new edition, he has been anxious to render it more worthy of this approbation, by numerous corrections, and by considerable addi- tions, which he trusts may serve to illustrate those parts of the subject to which they refer. The more important of these are under the fol- lowing departments. At page 15, he has varied the statement respecting First ‘Truths in Moral Science, in a manner which, he trusts, will ob- viate some of the objections to that doctrine, by showing how these important articles of belief arise out of each other by an obvious and natural sequence. At page 167, additional observations have been introduced on the manner in which both moral emotions, and the result of evidence in regard to truth, arise out of intellectual pro- cesses which are entirely voluntary,—and on the important influence of Attention as the first step in this chain of moral sequences. At pages 186- 190--193~—and 197, he has modified the observa- tions respecting the doctrine of Paley,—and has introduced additional considerations on the ex-
