Paulus de Middelburg (1445-1534) was a famous Dutch mathematician and physician. He taught at Louvain and Padua, and was physician to Francesco-Maria delle Rovere, Duke of Urbino. The Pope Alexander VI. made him Bishop of Fossom- brone and as such he presided over the fifth Lateran Council. He was specially known for his efforts to reform the calendar. This is the famous work against usury which was so strongly condemned by the Catholic Church. The author compares the imaginary increase of money by usury to the number of atoms existing in the universe. He also contributes here to accountancy by dealing with the calculation of interest.
