    PEEFACE All roads lead to Rome, says the proverb, even from the most unlikely places. It is so now : the materials for this lecture could hardly have been put together, had it not been for the noble foundation of Rahere in West Smithfield; and it was in the church of St. Bartholomew in the Tiber that Rahere first received the command to build the gTcat hospital, which from its very beginning has so greatly relieved human suffering directly; and in- directly, for the last two hundred years (in a way of which the founder can little have thought) by send- ing forth year by year men trained within its walls to heal the sick, and who practise their art as far as, or even beyond, the boundaries of Christendom. And the traveller who leaves the Church of St. Bar- tholomew, and crosses a branch of the Tiber, strikes at once upon the ancient Basilica which gave its title as cardinal to the great statesman and ecclesiastic to whom the College of Physicians owes its being. It is the parish church of a tribe of people whose, boast it is that they have preserved untouched the blood and oven the manners of the powerful com-
