    suddenly his father comes on the scene. It is time now to examine the bearing which the fear that comes through the unexpected has on the subject of self-consciousness. We think it will be apparent that this fear tends through its very nature to rouse the self- conscious state of mind. It centres the attention on the Self and the relation of that Self to other people. Further it tends to destroy courage, to make one frightened, timid, shy, confused, nervous. In some instances it brings blushing and stammering in its train. It always tends to paralyse thought and movement, to paint things black and gloomy, and to induce despair. The control of the un- expected, therefore, demands high qualities of mind, and a certain regime of thought-control to meet the sudden experience. Much, of course, depends on the individual’s native endowment, but we can promise, when we come to deal with the control of the fear of the unexpected, that much can be done to lessen the severity of the attack, and surely that in itself is worth the acquirement.
