    the diagnosis of heart affections. The Ashton-under-Lyne Workpeople’s Committee have kindly provided some new cots, dinner wagons, and other accessories and are installing .a refrigerator for the Children’s Hospital. The Co-operative Cot Committee have maintained in good condition the wireless installation and have provided some cots, a dinner wagon, and other useful gifts. It has been found necessary to amplify the water supply to the Laundry and Boiler House, and an auxiliary main has been brought in from the Fountain Street side of the premises. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS. It is the pleasing duty of your Board to thank all who so willingly assisted the Infirmary during the year. A steady flow of gifts in money, useful commodities, and much self- denying service have helped to make the work of the hospital fruitful of great good. v The Stamford Park Committee maintained throughout the year gifts of vegetables which have been very acceptable. The various ladies’ committees of several districts and the long-established Ladies’ Work Society, who raised the sum of £169 to purchase materials, have helped to make up some of the materials into useful garments, and provided equipment for some of the wards. Ladies of the sewing parties attending at the Infirmary on two afternoons each week have again given devoted service which has been highly appreciated. The Ashton Branch of the Women’s Voluntary Service administered on several days each week the Out-patient Canteen, and on Saturday afternoon ladies and gentlemen of the Ashton Workpeople’s Committee continued this useful work. The Police and Ambulance authorities have again been of valuable help to the staff. To those members of the Board and friends who made gifts to the Christmas Dinners Fund, hearty acknowledgments are tendered. It is not possible to specify by name all who have given devoted aid to the institution, but the Governors are deeply gratified by the encouragement received from all sections of the community. . CONCLUSION. Your Board do not feel justified in prophesying as to the future of the voluntary hospitals. Despite White Papers and Government pronouncements, they are, however, convinced that the District Infirmary will long be called upon to minister to the health of the local community. n
