Dear Dr. Crick: Dr. Robert Miller (University of British Columbia) and myself have been asked by the Canadian Biochemical Society to organize a Symposium on Nucleic Acid Replication, to be held March 2-7, 1975, at Le Chateau Montebello, roughly half-way between Ottawa and Montreal. This symposium, sponsored jointly with the Chemical Institute of Canada, will last four days. It will be organized like the very successful conference held two years ago in Banff on Nucleic Acid Struc ture and Function. Scientific sessions will be held (except for the last day) in the mornings and evenings, with the afternoons free for discussion and other activities such as ice skating or skiing, swimming in a heated pool, or visiting Montreal or Ottawa. On behalf of the QC and CBS we hope to persuade you to attend the symposium and to give the Thursday evening talk on 'The Origin and Evolution of Self-replicating Systems. It is our hope that whoever gives this closing talk will be able to relate it to much of what has been discussed in the preceding four days. If you would prefer an alternate title please let me know. Enclosed is an outline of the tentative program to give you an idea of the sort of meeting we are planning. The purpose of the meeting is to bring together researchers who have an active interest in some facet of nucleic acid replication — RNA or DNA, viral or eukaryote. The symposium will be an international one with a number of investigators from outside North America. In order to facilitate exchanges of views the number of participants will be limited to about 250. The timing of the conference should be ideal because by that time we ought to have a reasonably detailed outline of the events occurring during nucleic acid replication and it should be possible to compose the information from a variety of sources into a unified picture (or pictures i). I know that you will have a great deal to contribute to this meeting and I sincerely hope that you will be able to come for the week. We will pay your travel expenses( economy air fare or the equivalent), board and room during the meeting, and in addition provide a $75 honorarium. If you expect to not be able to attend, I would be grateful if you would let me know so that I can seek an alternate speaker (suggestions are welcome).
