    Besides being Remedial, and useful in general as an antidote to daily life, Exercise serves as an outlet for superfluous energy, and also some- times as outlet for undesirable feelings. Exercise undoubtedly is one of the most valu- able factors in the elimination of waste-matter. And in certain forms, especially in the form of Games, it has a Social value. _Side by side with deficiency of Exercise, there is excess of Sitting and, to a less extent, of Stand- ing. The worst of it is that most people sit and stand in the wrong position, allowing their shoulders to come forward, and their chin to poke, the tendency being not only for the chest to be cramped, but also for the organs to sink down, so that they do not function properly, and so that they press upon other organs below. The disadvantage is not merely in the appear- ance, but also in the general Health, and in the Circulation. Under the Sitting habit we must include not merely the sitting at work and at meals, but also the habit of sitting on the way to work. Many people would be far better if they walked to or from their work, or both to and from their work. Cycling and motoring have to some extent taken the place of walking, not altogether to the benefit of the public. 4 We can relieve our habit of Sitting by getting up now and then, especially if we are alone, and doing a little stretching, and rising on the toes, and practising deep and fuller breathing, and muscular relaxing, as suggested in ‘“‘ Through the Day.”
