    is that we become more useful, and at the same time more attractive and interesting to others. In spite of all that is said to the contrary, we must regard the great mass of people as still Ultra-Conservative. They are obedient to auth- ority and customs: it may not be the old-fash- ioned authority and customs: it may be the (in some respects) less satisfactory modern, selfish customs. I object to this obedience to authority and customs, not merely because it is obedience to authority and customs, but because authority and customs are not carefully judged by their results: people have not thought out carefully whether the authority and customs are for the benefit of themselves and others. Too many people live in a hypnotised condition; they do most of what they do, not because they think it right, but because they do not think about it at . all: they go on existing with about as much self- will and conscious self-direction as flowing water has: they are carried along by the stream. <TOO MUCH RESPECTABILITY > There is too much Respectability altogether in the world. The great condemnations of Jesus were of the respectable, orthodox people; he did not condemn people as purposely hypocritical, and as trying to deceive others, but rather, so far as we can see, because of their object: they did things not with the idea that these things were right, but in order to be praised by men, and
