No, the photograph (courtesy of Dr. Dorothy Warburton) is a comparison of human and chimpanzee karyotypes, an imaginary hybrid, if you will. The chromosome on the left of each pair is a human chromsome while the one on the right is from a chimpanzee. Human chromosome number 2 has matching bands in chimpanzee chromosomes 13 and 17. What does this have to do with genetic counseling? See Chapter 2 for some answers. They propose that regulatory mutations account for the major biological differ¬ ences between humans and chimpanzees. A paper by Miller [1977] provides evidence that the gorilla is more closely related to man than the chimpanzee and that all three enjoyed an ancestral type in common many million years ago. Thus the possibihty of a human-goriUa hybrid seems more interesting but perhaps less practical to obtain than a chimpan¬ zee-human hybrid fetus. Even fetuses between chimpanzees and gorillas would be of extraordinary interest and scientific value, if they could be obtained. Hybrids among the primates would not only provide specific data as.to the in¬ heritance of fundamental traits but would also give us a much better feeling for the relative influences of genetic and environmental factors affecting behavioral traits that are so difficult for the counselor in medical genetics to deal with. ji 5 2 13 17 ^ H ft Ч î 3 2 ^ S li 4 3 *? ** m i m 5 5 ?•» « 7 6 22 14 15 tut* й n »é ä 15 16 • * m • П ». 20 21 Il m ^ г* 9 11 21 22 l'i 5 а 10 8 Hfl •«* é ti 16 19 а> f 22 23 m m 11 9 * i m ** 17 18 H pè X X Ф r и 4 wt 12 10 ^ 1 « 18 12 § A Y Y](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b18037161_0021.JP2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
