An air gap is the unobstructed vertical distance through the free atmosphere between the lowest opening from any supply pipe or fixture drain and the flood-level rimof the receiving receptacle. An air gap should be at least twice the diameter of the delivery pipe or drain which is being protected. When a receiving funnel is provided, its vertical sides may be extended upward provided the gap 1S measured from the top of the extended side of the funnel to the end of the pipe or drain.
