    NOTICE TO THE ENGLISH PUBLIC. The following pages are from the pen of Dr. Caleb Ticknor, of New York, wrhose previous work, entitled “ The Philosophy of Living,” has gained so much celebrity, that we have preferred using that title to designate the author of the pre¬ sent volume, and as a means of directing public attention to the individual to whom the merit of that highly useful production is really due. The only liberty taken with this treatise has been to alter the arrangement of the title, to correct some few errors, evidently the result of inadvertence, and to explain, in the form of notes, such portions as appeared to require attention.
