Notes

The Isthmian Canal Commission (ICC) was the part of the U.S. Government responsible for building the canal. The ICC was ended in 1914 and the Panama Canal Company came into being, still as part of the U.S. Government.
Panama Canal workers had segregated living and eating quarters: American and European workers paid in gold were termed 'gold roll', whilst West Indian and Panaman workers paid in silver were termed 'silver roll'; this photograph shows one of the 'gold roll' hotel dining rooms of the Culebra Cut
