![Deaths froin One to Five yrs Deaths from Disease. Small-po.x. Measles f) 6. Meninoitis (not Tubercdlous), 11 months, in Stoneyfields. 6. Maras.mas AND Vomiting, 3 week.s, in West Ohadsmoor. Also aniorpfst other deaths was that of a newly-born male child, unknown, found drowned in the Hednesford Basin of the Birmingham Canal. A verdict of wilful murder was returned at the inquest against some person or ])ersons unknown. The total number of deaths is 50, as against 46 for 1908, and 25 for 1907. Included amongst them were fif- teen from measles, one from scarlatina, two from whoop- ing couh, three from diptheria and membranous croup, two from inftuen/.a, four fi'ora diarrhoea, and eleven fioira bi'onchitis and pneumonia. There is practically the same marked differeiiie in mor- tality between children under one year and those from one to five yeai-s as existed in 1908. Deaths fiom the various disea.ses were as follows, viz.— None. Twenty-one deaths occurred as against nine in the preceding year, six being in the Cannock Wanl, three in the Hednesford Ward, and twelve in the Chadsmoor Ward. Successive outbreaks of this disease occuiTed throughout the year in the different pai-ts of the district, the school attendances decr easing so r ii])idly ms r-ender’ed it forthwith necessar’y to adopt infant school closur e.
