Description
"There are ... besides two workhouses, or houses of correction, where they manufacture rugs and coarfe kerseys, with which those confined there are clothed, and where they also spin. In one of them, those who have not performed their task are hoisted up in a basket over the table in the common hall, while the rest are at dinner that they may be tantalized with the sight and smell of what they cannot taste."--Middleton, loc. cit.
